In 1951, the Festival of Britain transformed the South Bank from a bomb-damaged industrial area to a place rich in creativity and bold thinking. The festival showcased British achievements in design, science, architecture and culture, in a bold statement of intent for post-war Britain, looking to the future.
The festival featured new, revolutionary architecture, exhibitions, events, and public space, attracting millions of visitors, drawn by radical ideas, optimism for the future, and sheer spectacle.
Seventy-five years on, that same spirit of ambition is still shaping the South Bank. Here at Coin Street, we’ve created something enduring: a living, working neighbourhood rooted in community ownership and long-term social value.
As part of this journey, we’ve fought to secure large parts of the South Bank, preventing them from becoming faceless hotels and offices, and instead putting people first, with co-operative housing, cultural and exhibition space, studio workspaces, green areas, and public riverside access.
As we look back to celebrate the Festival of Britain’s 75th anniversary, we also look to Coin Street’s future, as we continue to protect, support, and build a thriving community of opportunity on the South Bank.
