Karl Stengel

Abstract colourful painting.

Karl Stengel’s debut solo UK show marks 100 years since the artist’s birth. This exhibition offers UK audiences their first opportunity to discover the prolific yet overlooked artist, and will showcases Stengel’s distinctive style, which fuses abstraction and representation, and bridges European and American 20th-century artistic traditions.

From 21 - 30 May 2025, 24 paintings, drawings, mixed-media works and rarely seen drawing diaries will reflect the profound influence of personal and political events on his life and work. From imprisonment in a Siberian Gulag in the 1940s to fleeing the Hungarian Revolution in 1956; but also, through the impact of literature, theatre and music on Stengel’s art.
