In 1984, I began my degree course in Town & Country Planning at Bristol Polytechnic (now the University of the West of England). This, of course, was the same year that Coin Street Community Builders was launched. In 1987, our third year of a four-year course, we had a field trip to London. As part of this trip, we visited Coin Street Community Builders as, by then, it was already a beacon of ‘good practice’ in building community.
Who knew then that I would end up living in Waterloo and making good use of the many activities that Coin Street Community Builders provides!
I am a regular attendee of the Saturday morning over 50’s gym, I have sailed down the Thames on two summer boat parties, I’ve visited exhibitions and enjoyed lunch and breakfast on community trips to Tate Modern. I’ve accessed complimentary tickets to see top rated films at the British Film Festival, I have also made friends with some wonderful local people.
It’s been such a supportive resource, great for mental and physical health and wellbeing. Coin Street continues to be a beacon of community support, sticking to its original aims and objectives. It makes Waterloo and the South Bank feel more like a village than the built-up metropolis it is.
I can only give my heartfelt thanks and love to all involved.
Long may it survive and continue to thrive.
