Jaemii-Lee, age 10, takes over the Waterloo Bridge digital billboard

During the Black Lives Matter (BLM) conversations occurring all over the UK, one young SE1 artist, Jaemii-Lee, age 10, decided to illustrate this important message. Her artwork impressed us so much, we decided to feature it for a week on the digital billboard on Waterloo Bridge.

On hearing that her artistic talents were going to be displayed in such a central London location, the whole family were excited to visit the billboard.

Jaemii-Lee was inspired by the BLM movement so much she wanted to express the beauty and power she experienced.

Jaemii-Lee often creates art as a regular Coin Street Youth member and most recently participated in last month’s Illuminated Rivers project.

Bringing art to more communities is something we are passionate about. Coin Street recently benefited from the Illuminated River Foundation’s Community Fund to develop and deliver art workshops for young people aged 9+ in the local community.

After learning about what happened to George Floyd, I realised how vital education is in our children’s lives. Children are our future. We may not be able to abolish racism overnight but a ripple in the water will set trends.

And as a key partner in the Waterloo Festival, this year’s festival brought virtual art classes to 15 local young artists. Each week the children painted a different iconic bridge of the river Thames using a different medium of art. The artwork of our young artists has been so fantastic they were also featured on the digital billboard on Waterloo Bridge.
