Margaret has volunteered with Coin Street since 2018, supporting Feel Good Saturday fitness sessions for older adults and, more recently, tutoring young people on the Upgrade Yourself programme. What began as a desire to give something back to her community has become an important part of her own life.
Through volunteering, Margaret has built lasting friendships, expanded her social network and become part of the vibrant Coin Street community. She has also developed new skills through training opportunities, including qualifying as a Mental Health First Aider, enabling her to provide even greater support to the people around her.
One of the things Margaret enjoys most is seeing the difference that community activities make to older residents. She has witnessed first-hand how regular opportunities to exercise, socialise and connect help reduce loneliness, improve wellbeing and bring people together.
For Margaret, volunteering is about much more than giving her time. It has enriched her own life through learning, friendship and shared experiences, while giving her the opportunity to support people of all ages across the community.
"Volunteering has given me so much in return. I've made wonderful friends, learned new skills and feel proud to play a small part in helping people feel connected and supported. I'd encourage anyone who's thinking about volunteering to give it a go."
