Connecting Waterloo Community Project

Volunteering

“Making Lambeth a place we can all call home” is the guiding theme of the Borough Plan—and it’s at the heart of our Connecting Waterloo Community Project.

Through a fresh, inclusive approach to volunteering, we aim to empower local residents to actively shape their neighbourhood, foster meaningful connections, and experience a genuine sense of belonging. By building a supportive circle of engagement, volunteers of all ages will be welcomed, encouraged, and equipped to contribute in ways that matter—bringing lasting benefits to Lambeth residents at every stage of life.

Our project brings together the collective strengths of Coin Street, St John’s Waterloo, Bright Centres, and Oasis Hub Waterloo to create a more connected and impactful approach to volunteering. United by a shared commitment to community, we’re currently supported by 200 dedicated volunteers who reinvest their time, talents, and passion directly into the neighbourhood.

With the support of this funding, in June 2025 we’ve introduced a Volunteer Programme Lead role—hosted by Coin Street—who, over the next 24 months, will work alongside all four organisations to elevate the volunteer journey. This means improving support, streamlining recruitment and onboarding, and creating more meaningful opportunities for people to get involved.

Our ambition is to grow our volunteer base from within the local community, ensuring that every participant enjoys a fulfilling and empowering experience—while making a tangible difference to the lives of others. We’re especially focused on engaging individuals who often face barriers to volunteering, including people with disabilities or additional needs, parents and carers, and those on low incomes.

By building confidence, developing new skills, and increasing pathways to employment, our volunteer programme will not only uplift individuals—it will strengthen the fabric of our community.
