Jonny first heard about our volunteering opportunities through a colleague. His workplace offers employees three volunteer days a year, and we're one of them, one that quickly stood out to him. The range of initiatives and the social aspect is what intrigued him, and he decided to join.
So far, Jonny has volunteered for one term as an Upgrade Yourself tutor. Though he’s only participated in those sessions, he sees room for getting more involved in the future.
He initially started tutoring online, and despite not being face-to-face, he found ways to build connections: “It took a second to adjust to that… but after a couple of weeks it felt nice.” He’s also supported occasional sessions with our Herbs, Flowers, Teas, and Treats group, and loved the opportunity to connect with members of the local community.
When asked what he enjoys the most about volunteering with us, Jonny does not hesitate: “Everyone I’ve met… has just been so warm and welcoming and you can tell they are there to create a space that is meant for people to feel comfortable.”
He explains that he has felt a feeling of community, which has left a lasting impression: “I’ve felt that sense of community… I want to be part of creating that community as well. From the older generation, down to young kids, people are benefitting from the space… It’s a really valuable asset.”
One of the most meaningful parts of the experience for him has been the stories he hears: “The anecdotes you get from people who have stories that are so different from your own experience… It’s really refreshing to hear about things you’re not usually around.”
Volunteering isn’t new to Jonny, but he explains that here it feels different: “There’s more of a relaxed feel. People can come in at any point, with anything, and there will be no judgment”.
Jonny says that volunteering doesn’t just have an impact on others, but it’s had an impact on his life as well: “It’s refreshing and boosts my mood… You just feel a bit lighter.” Volunteering has allowed him to reflect and take a step back from his own life and find peace in the community: “I want to advocate for more”.
Would he recommend volunteering with us? “Absolutely,” he says. “I think everybody should [volunteer] in some shape or form… I don’t think you could come away from it feeling worse off.”
Looking ahead, Jonny sees volunteering as a long-term part of his life and is open to different events: “It would be silly not to continue.”
