Maya's Story

Maya

My name is Maya and I have been a member of the Coin Street Community since around the age of 4, which is a long time ago now. I started by attending Coin Street services with my parents and my little brother Logan.

Around the age of 13, I joined Girls Group, where I met a lot of young people from the area. This allowed me to socialise and take part in activities. Through these experiences, I was able to take part in a funding application with London Youth, this allowed us to run and organise activities and a small trip.

A few other young people and I worked together over spring and summer to prepare and run a T-shirt stall. We enjoyed working towards creating opportunities for the community and officially started the Coin Street Youth Forum. I learnt and enhanced many skills, such as public speaking, organisation, collaborating with others and time management, to name a few.

Being a part of the Coin Street Youth forum encouraged me to take these skills and use them at places like London Youth or paid work experience with the Old Vic. All these opportunities have helped give me to gain the experience I needed to always push myself to try new things.

After studying Community Arts Practice at the Brit School for two years, I started my degree in Media Studies at the University of Kent. Whilst starting my first year at university, I was also working for Coin Street as a youth and community team worker, this felt like a full circle moment.

I have just finished a year abroad studying at San Diego State University (SDSU.) Without the resources, time and support from Coin Street, I think that it would have been more challenging for me to have got through the process of attending SDSU and being in San Diego for a year.

Coin Street has always encouraged me to believe in myself and my potential whilst also providing me with many opportunities to learn how to do so. Coin Street has been vital in providing young people, families, and members of the community with life changing opportunities to grow and flourish.
