For this instalment of the series, we spoke to Karin Hossack of KCHossack Pottery. Karin makes ceramic tableware and serve ware with scalloped edges, specialising in using a variety of bright and bold colours and colour matching. Her distinctive style of creating emanates the hand-feel of the maker.
The line of scalloped edge table and serve ware is constantly developing with new edges being introduced annually, and colours changing seasonally. By purposely choosing to keep the glazing monotone, one can stack the pieces and appreciate the impact of the different edges and varied colours.
All of Karin's work is bespoke, hand built, fired in a kiln and glazed in her studio. Handbuilding allows for the clay to speak for itself whilst enhancing the concept of elegant, pretty simplicity of the work. The work is made to sit on the table either en masse, stacked or mixed into an eclectic collection of ceramics.
Karin tells us that she really appreciates being a part of the creative community of Oxo Tower Wharf, having joined us in her new studio 6 months ago. She enjoys having a shopfront at Oxo Tower Wharf and thinks of her studio as a workshop – she creates her ceramics in-studio while anyone can come in, have a look around, and shop one of her pieces. In her new studio, she can speak to customers directly about how she makes her products and what the creative process involves.
Karin says she was excited about joining Oxo Tower Wharf as having a storefront space means that customers can visit, pick up their orders, and she especially enjoys having the opportunity to meet the people who are purchasing her work.
As a ceramicist, Karin is known for her scalloped edges that she has worked with for five years. Over the years she has created six different scallop designs. She uses patterns that help her to cut the edges out of the clay, and she also enjoys working with colour and layering colours together when stacking her products. On her Instagram page, you will often find shots of her ceramics from a birds-eye view onto stacked plates and bowls, which provides a view of new and unique colour combinations. She tells us that she likes to expose people to colour combinations that they may not have thought about or considered before. This shows that adding colour to your table can enhance your tablescape and the food that is served.
We asked Karin: “If you had to describe KCHossack Pottery in three words, which three words would you pick?”
She responded: “Functional, independent, and handmade!”
