London Design Festival celebrates and promotes London as the design capital of the world. The 20th edition will take place across the city on 17-25 September 2022.

At Oxo Tower Wharf, we have a jam packed and thrilling programme of events planned across our galleries and our talented designer-maker community. We have various workshops and exhibitions hosted by our creative designer-makers in their studios, along with brand new Pop Ups dotted around Oxo Tower Wharf. From 22-25 September, we will also be hosting Material Matters 2022 in Bargehouse, an exciting new fixture on the London design calendar.

The World Reimagined | 13 August – 31 October at the Courtyard

The World Reimagined is a ground-breaking, vibrant UK art education project. It aims to transform how we understand the Transatlantic Trade in Enslaved Africans and its impact on all of us so that we can make racial justice a reality, together.

The project sees a trail of large globe sculptures across seven UK cities. In London, the globe at Oxo Tower Wharf is an installation as part of the London Design Festival activity at Oxo, across September and beyond. The globe is positioned in the Courtyard in front of gallery@oxo and Bargehouse – perfect for visiting in between exhibitions and workshops.

Until 31 October 2022, the globes displayed across these cities aim to inspire and galvanise communities to better understand what it means to be Black and British. The globe displayed at Oxo Tower Wharf is titled 'Fury and Fire', created as a collaboration between Saint Lucian artists Fiona Compton and Hailey Gonzales.

Carréducker: Leathercraft and Shoe Design Workshops | 17 – 21 September at Unit 1.20, First Floor Courtyard

James Ducker and Deborah Carré of bespoke shoemakers Carréducker, run the UK’s only handsewn shoemaking & leather school at Oxo Tower Wharf on London’s iconic South Bank. They have designed a packed schedule of workshops to coincide with this year’s London Design Festival, including a selection of leathercraft workshops and a shoe design class.

The leathercraft workshops – ranging from making a belt to a secateurs case - are designed for complete beginners and are an excellent introduction to the traditional British leathercraft technique of saddle stitch. All accessories are made in sustainably sourced veg. tanned leather from Italy and oak bark tanned leather from Devon, with the smaller leather accessories made from offcuts from their bespoke shoemaking to reduce waste.

Carréducker’s Leathercraft and Shoe Design Workshops take place on 17 – 21 September, Saturday – Wednesday 11am-6pm, at their studio on the First Floor Courtyard of Oxo Tower Wharf. To see the full schedule of workshops and buy your tickets, visit their website here.

Material Matters | 22 – 25 September at Bargehouse

Material Matters is an exciting new fixture on the London design calendar.

Based on the critically acclaimed podcast of the same name, the four-day event at Bargehouse brings together a slew of world-leading brands, designer-makers, organisations and federations, to celebrate the importance of materials and their ability to shape our lives.

Material Matters will feature a wide range of exhibits: from site-specific installations to displays by innovators and experimentalists whose practice is at the cutting edge of materials. With a marketplace, a learning space and an extensive programme of talks, the fair will investigate, among other things, how the design industry can address issues around the circular economy and why material intelligence is so important to all our lives.

Taking place at the end of London Design Festival, Material Matters runs from 22 – 25 September, Thursday – Saturday 10am-6pm and Sunday 11am-4pm at Bargehouse. To book your tickets, click here.
