CURRENTS

A blue painting of the sky by Emma Hartley.

Introducing CURRENTS, an exhibition of new paintings from aunt and niece, Emma Hartley and Alice Hartley, 12-17 October at gallery@oxo.

CURRENTS - a movement of water, air or electricity in a particular direction.

Both Emma and Alice come from the South Downs, Emma living and working in Hawkley, Alice growing up in nearby village Sheet and now living and working in London. Coming together to share their mutual ties to this land they know so well, specifically the trails of the Hangers that run from Steep to Hawkley, an almost timeless space, one knows so well that has witnessed oneself in every form and state. A common ground that allows one to collect, remember and be transported, playing such a role in both artists' lives.

Both aunt and niece have worked in oil paint with very different approaches, however, they share an understanding in their gesture, pace and relief.
