Did you know that the 15th of August is known as National Relaxation Day?

National Relaxation Day is the perfect opportunity to allow yourself to unwind, kick up your feet and take it easy – even when it falls on a Monday!

Though we think everyone should find ways to relax daily, we know that this isn’t always possible for every person. We each have our own schedules and responsibilities every day that may increase feelings of stress. However, relaxation is a significant part of self-care and taking care of your mental health. So, we implore you to make National Relaxation Day a priority this year.

Follow our tips below to make the most of the day and find some time to relax within your busy schedule.

What is National Relaxation Day?

National Relaxation Day is exactly what the name suggests – it’s a day to relax!

It’s an annual observance on the 15th of August every year which gives all who participate a chance to get the rest and downtime they need. There are different types of rest that we require; sometimes we need more physical rest such as sleep, and sometimes it’s more of a mental break that we need.

Looking after your physical and mental health is the best way of improving your wellbeing, and they often go hand in hand. Prioritising your mental health can also prevent the development of future physical ailments.

Today is also a great opportunity to remind your loved ones to take care of themselves as well. Make sure to check in with your friends and family, and ensure they are also getting the rest that they need.

Why is relaxation so important?

At times, we get so embroiled in our hectic lifestyles with deadlines to meet and work-life pressure, meaning we can easily forget to take time out of our day to relax. Even small periods of relaxation, such as a regular five-minute break throughout the workday, can equip us with the energy required to tackle our workload or the problems we’re facing.

Staying in a high state of stress for too long can be damaging to our health, mood, and behaviour. Stress can cause physical symptoms such as headaches, tension in the neck and shoulders, fatigue, and an inability to sleep. It can also affect our mental state as it elevates levels of cortisol – a hormone that affects the function of the brain. This can result in worrying, poor concentration, and uncontrollable thoughts.

Stress is not always avoidable but learning to manage it is key. Practising relaxation increases blood flow around the body, which can boost our energy levels. Relaxation leads to a calmer and clearer mind which boosts concentration, reduces blood pressure, and relieves tension. It can even help fight off disease and infection, as it aids digestion and helps us absorb nutrients more efficiently.
