SE1 holds a very deep-rooted place in my heart, in both my personal life and in my creative work.
I was first aware of the work Coin Street did through their housing developments. My husbands’ family are founding members of a housing co-operative in Canada, so we were really interested in the idea of co-op living in the heart of London.
I joined Coin Street Community Builders over 12 years ago on a casual basis, whilst setting up my own business. As part of the Help Desk team, it’s great to share some of my local knowledge and excitement about what Coin Street does through my work at the neighbourhood centre. There is so much variety and I love being able to connect with those coming into the centre and using the wider services.
Since the late 00’s, I have enjoyed sunny summers at Bernie Spain Gardens and New Year’s Eve fireworks with friends, even celebrating our wedding reception on the Thames. It was here I met my husband and made it our home which became the central point for so many stories, memories and moments.
As a designer, I admire the work Coin Street has done to provide accessible spaces to local creatives and independent makers. Through my own projects I have developed many connections to OXO Tower Wharf, from independent pop-up shops to exhibiting in several of the major design & craft shows that Coin Street have supported.
Living just off Coin Street meant that the South Bank became my immediate neighbourhood, with the river’s shores being a place to find space and recharge. With its bright lights the OXO Tower became a beacon for home - embodying my London family, creativity, and belonging to this wonderful part of the city. I’ve always admired the iconic architecture that was right on my doorstep and knew I wanted to incorporate this into my next body of work. After designing a new Thames collection of fabric patterns, a commission for five large-scale artworks inspired by the Tower’s magnificent structure shortly followed.
Being asked to create a public installation on the Bargehouse was such an incredible opportunity and I feel quite special to be part of the rich history that is continually being written here on the South Bank.
Years ago, people were astounded when they found out I lived in Waterloo and would always reply “but Where?” not realising that there was this amazing community and life that really does exist once the commuters have left for the day.
Whether I’m listening to the waves lapping on Ernie’s beach or taking a moment to enjoy the roses in Bernie Spain Garden, it makes me happy to be part of this special neighbourhood right in the heart of the city. When I come here, it’s like coming home.
