London Design Festival: CascadeUp

CascadeUp brings UCL and UK CLT’s bio-based, circular economy innovation to life. It’s a world-first pilot transforming waste timber from demolition into a modular building, delivered by Colin Rose, Jonas Breidenbach and Patrick Quinn.

Timber that would otherwise have entered demolition waste streams, destined for chipping and incineration, has instead been collected, prepared for reuse and manufactured into ‘cross-laminated secondary timber’ (CLST) and ‘glued-laminated secondary timber’ (glulamST).

This innovation provides a low-carbon alternative to structural materials such as concrete and steel. Timber structures also store carbon over the long-term – whereas incinerating waste wood releases the carbon captured by trees back into the atmosphere.

CLST and glulamST have a fully traceable, local, socially fair supply chain. Implemented at scale, this circular system drives new employment opportunities in reclamation and manufacturing close to cities.

Make sure to come down and learn about the project directly from the UCL team, who will be onsite at the CascadeUp stage from 12-12.30 and 16-16:30 on Wednesday 18 September, Friday 20 September, and Saturday 21 September to answer all your questions. Register here. You can also sign up to the special session, ‘BuildZero: Making the best use of space and materials' which will be taking place on the CascadeUp stage from 16:00-17:00 on Thursday 19 September with a panel of experts.

BuildZero is an innovative research programme with a vision of a future where society’s building stock needs can be met with zero raw material extraction, zero carbon and zero waste. The panel will be chaired by Dani Densley-Tingley (University of Sheffield), PI on the EPSRC funded BuildZero funded grant, with panelists from across  the built environment sector, including Rachel Hoolahan (ORMS), Andrew Jackson ( Cundall), Talia Berriman (Newham Council), Colin Rose (UCL), and Flavie Lowres (Finish and Interiors Sector).
