Veuve Clicquot – The Widow Series: Rebels At Bargehouse

Rebels

Now firmly established in the London events calendar, this year’s annual celebration of Widow (or Veuve in French) Clicquot took place at Bargehouse, Oxo Tower Wharf.

With creative director Tom Hingston at the helm, REBELS brought together renowned designers, musicians and artists such as Nick Knight, Joe Goddard, Jenny Beth and Young Fathers to create a space for radical minds for three nights only.

Champagne lovers and rebels alike explored four floors of immersive installations each inspired by British subcultures and drawing parallels with the key moments in Madame Clicquot’s trailblazing story.

Highlights included Sunken Cargo, with murky, aquatic set design by Anna Burns and a fluid soundscape by Neneh Cherry (played through a Funktion-One sound system no less!), inspired by the discovery of 47 bottles of Veuve Clicquot by divers investigating a shipwreck in the Baltic Sea. The bottles dated back almost two centuries and represent the oldest drinkable champagne in the world to date – it’s believed the cargo was on its way to the Russian imperial court, sent by King Lois XVI.

After another glass of delicious, crisp Veuve Clicquot yellow label at The Comet Bar, guests reached the hazy delights of the top floor and Rebecca Louise Law’s Field of Dreams. A collaboration with sought after light artist Chris Levine, the space was an ode to the culture of mass celebration, congregation and unity; a festival field flooded with a pink and violet laser landscape. The experience was topped off by an exclusive edit of the iconic ‘Teardrop’ by Massive Attack, created by sensory music app Fantom.

Bargehouse was transformed into a hedonistic haven; ‘There is a natural flow to the spaces held together by a single thread – from the opening manifesto, through the rebellious spirit of punk and onto the cohesion and unity fostered by festival and rave culture.’ Tom Hingston
