New raised beds in our community garden!

Gentle gardeners standing next to their new raised beds in the garden

The Coin Street gentle gardeners have been busy over the last few months, harvesting our crops, planning for the autumn and putting in some new raised beds in Bernie Spain Gardens.  It was a pleasure to start harvesting our tomatoes over the summer and into October.  The tomatoes were a real collaboration as they growing kits were donated by Waitrose, we started them off in sessions with the boys at London Nautical School and grew them in some sunny window sills until planting them out into the beds in Bernie Spain Gardens in June.  We have had loads of delicious cherry tomatoes that we have been enjoying in salads, soups and even chutney over the last few months.

Thank you to Metropolitan Public Gardens Association for a grant towards some additional raised beds in Bernie Spain Garden.  The team have worked incredibly hard over the last few weeks to plan, prepare and put in the raised beds and we have drawn on lots of local support and advice!  After treating the wood with linseed oil to help preserve it we put the beds in place, lined and then filled with compost.  We have some seedlings to put in kindly donated from Myatts Field Park Greenhouse and are looking forward to seeing how things grow in the new space.  We always welcome new gardeners to the group so please come along on a Tuesday to find out more! Finally congratulations to London Nautical School gardening group for winning a Highly Commended award at the Blooming Lambeth Awards hosted by Incredible Edible Lambeth. The boys worked with the gardening team last year to develop their growing spaces as well as learning from volunteering in the garden, well done!
