Liam's Story

Liam Banner

Coin Street has been a part of my life since I was eight. For me, it’s always been a place to learn, have fun, and grow—both personally and professionally. Today, as part of the Youth and Community Programme team, I’m proud to guide the next generation, passing on the same support that shaped me.

My journey began with the holiday camps, where I experienced a wide variety of sports, went on exciting trips, and made new friends. The football stadium tours were especially memorable. When I became too old to attend, Coin Street asked me to stay on as a volunteer. That experience kept me active as a teenager, taught me leadership skills, and allowed me to become a positive role model for younger kids.

Volunteering opened the door to Coin Street’s Young Leaders Group, where I chaired meetings, organised local projects, and received mentorship. One of my favourite projects was the youth talent showcase, which I hosted.

Watching my friends perform and show off their talents was a highlight. Another standout was helping Southwark Council design a new mental health centre for young people. The name I suggested was chosen, and the centre is now known as The Nest Southwark.

During lockdown, the Young Leaders group stayed connected virtually, supporting each other with chats, quizzes, and TV show recommendations to beat the boredom.

Coin Street also helped me land work experience at a top engineering firm, and the skills and guidance I gained helped with my university applications. With their support, I received offers from five Russell Group universities and went on to study Civil Engineering at Newcastle University.

While at university, I continued to support young people online through Coin Street’s tutoring programs and stayed involved in the holiday camps. It was also great to see my parents get involved in the wellbeing activities for seniors—something I didn’t expect! They’re in the best shape I’ve ever seen.

Now, as a recent graduate preparing for the next steps in my career, I’m grateful for everything Coin Street has given me. They’ve been a constant source of support, and I’m excited to continue giving back to the community that’s always been there for me.

Coin Street has been more than just a place to grow up; it’s been the foundation for everything I’ve achieved. Now, it’s my turn to give back to the community that’s given me so much.
