International Women’s Day 8 March 2022

International Women's Day

Today is a day of unity, a truly global event to celebrate women and all of their amazing achievements whilst pressing forward in the fight for gender equality.

These are difficult times, thinking of how life has changed for women in Afghanistan, and the struggle ahead for all Ukrainians. Not forgetting the impact of the pandemic on women everywhere.

It is so important to recognise how International Women’s Day puts a spotlight on all the issues affecting all of us all over the globe. 70% of the world’s poor are female; this isn’t a women’s issue, this a human issue.

The theme this year is #BreakTheBias.

Breaking the bias is all about challenging the challenges and confronting all biases, both conscious and unconscious.

It even has a pose! So join in the fun, take a selfie, show your support for the under-represented.

To ensure that young women everywhere understand that their ambitions and achievements are equal in measure to men. That gender stereotypes must be challenged, it is a call to everyone to band together to raise one another up, not by pressing others down, but by insisting on inclusion and diversity.

The women’s movement has a long, rich history of pushing for change. Since 1909 there have been international gatherings of women and men to fight for our right to vote, for our legal and biological rights, to change our economic status, to be recognised as a person.

In 1975 the United Nations officially recognised 8 March as a UN holiday for women’s rights and world peace and that is still the dream.

We asked some of the women in the Coin Street office which women inspire them. Answers included Maya Angelou, Margaret Atwood, Ada Lovelace, Rosa Luxemburg, Angela Davis, Natalie Bell, Dolly Parton, the women we work with and many more.

Which women inspire you? Make sure to let them know!
