5 things you didn’t know about Coin Street…

1. We are a social enterprise

Income generated from hiring our venues stays in the neighbourhood and helps us to provide free and affordable activities for families, children, young people, adults in our community. Find out more about who we are

Did you know that we have an 84-place day nursery based on the first floor of the neighbourhood centre?

2. Sustainability is a priority for us

Not only has the Coin Street neighbourhood centre been designed with sustainability in mind, we carefully select all of our suppliers so that they are in line with our practices.

Our conference caterers are based just down the road in Lambeth North Eden Caterers are the first catering business in the UK to eliminate single-use plastic. Instead they use naturally-fallen palm leaf platters and wrap their food in PLA film made from plants. They even have their own on-site recycling system, churning up on-site food waste and transforming it into renewable energy!

3. Coin Street neighbourhood centre is fully accessible

Our neighbourhood centre is fully accessible, with step free access throughout the building. The building was designed with accessibility in mind, with hearing loops available and audio announcements in our lifts and a range of other facilities. We’ve also hosted events for SCOPE, Disability Lib and Disability Advice Service Lambeth. We are AccessAble registered too!

4. We manage a few other sites you may know

Did you know we also own and manage Oxo Tower Wharf and Gabriel’s Wharf?

In 1977, after a developer announced plans to build a massive office and hotel on the Coin Street sites, the Coin Street Action Group began seven years of campaigning for an alternative vision. In 1984 the not for profit Coin Street Community Builders was created. Since then we have created a thriving, diverse, and vibrant place. Oxo Tower Wharf was refurbished with co-op homes, restaurants, cafes and bars, and design studios and galleries.

A few steps along the Riverside Walkway, at Gabriel’s Wharf, you will find an eclectic mix of independent designer-makers, bars and restaurants. Whether it’s vegan pies, art, eccentric wooden sculptures or beautiful handcrafted clothes – there’s a great range of shops to explore.

5. It’s not just buildings we’re interested in

At Coin Street we believe in mixed uses, a diverse economy and a diverse community. Whether you’re mudlarking on Ernie’s Beach, eating your lunch on the grass in Bernie Spain Gardens, strolling along the Riverside Walkway, or participating in a community activity, we’re all about creating a welcoming place for people to live, work and play.
