Spring/summer with the Community Programmes Team
Over the past two months, Coin Street’s Community Programmes team have been busy continuing their work in delivering a strong and varied programme of events for local residents. These activities ranged from new youth gym sessions, to family trips to the theatre and even an active afternoon at a trampoline park.
Young people remain a key focus for the Community Programmes team; we are now hosting youth gym sessions every Friday evening at Columbo Centre with seven young people in regular attendance hoping to improve their fitness. We also took the youth club on two fun trips during the half term. Our first excursion was to Air Hop Trampoline Park, which 13 young people attended. We had a great afternoon of non-stop bouncing – even if the kids put the adults to shame. Next, we opted for the more leisurely Shrek’s World of Adventures, and another enjoyable day was had by all.
Following huge demand for community tickets to the Rambert performance at Sadler’s Wells in May, we organised a day trip for locals. 120 people came along to the show including families from the Holiday Play Scheme. One parent told us: “Lucy really enjoyed the performance. She was really impressed with the various types of dance moves and even tried to practise them when we got home. I thoroughly enjoyed it too.”
In a bid to encourage young footballers to complete a questionnaire as part of the youth consultation project, we offered them pizza. And our clever tactic was clearly successful as we obtained 20 new responses.
As the weather warms up, Bernie Spain Gardens continues to blossom. We had a great session on 28 May with lots of members of the public coming along to plant seeds and help our Stay ’n’ Play families water the plants. The Girls’ Club also planted some lovely wild flowers on the roof too, so be sure to look out for those as we head into the summer months.
With summer on our minds, our thoughts turn to the Waterloo Carnival. When visiting, keep an eye out for the colourful flags painted by our Over 50s Art Group as part of their oil painting project. We are also hosting a pre-carnival party at the Neighbourhood Centre, 5 July for parents and carers of children under 8 years old. Contact Lucy Wright (firstname.lastname@example.org) for more details.
In the coming weeks, the Community Programmes team will be working to facilitate the following:
- Monthly gardening session on Tuesday 21 June – Meet Natalie in Bernie Spain Gardens
- Run the Summer Sports Camp – For three weeks during the summer holidays (25 July-12 Aug), children aged 8-12 can enjoy a wide-range of sporting activities – including a boat trip to the Cutty Sark – for just £35 per week.
Our community programmes team develop, deliver and manage a range of youth groups; sports, arts and leisure programmes; and events for local people. Come along, have your say and find out about the services that are on offer.
