Mamma Mia! The Party
Lambeth Council’s planning committee deferred the decision to approve the visitor management plan for Mamma Mia! The Party (MMTP) at Tuesday’s meeting. Planning consent for this temporary venue for the site adjacent to the Coin Street neighbourhood centre was granted last November. MMTP is liaising with the council to ensure the committee has what is required to make a decision.
We are already working with the team behind MMTP to maximise the benefits this use of the site will bring to the neighbourhood. This includes over 50 new jobs, training opportunities and community use of the space outside of show times. We recognise the concerns of local residents. The team behind MMTP is committed to minimising any impact to residents, particularly around visitors arriving and leaving the venue. Their visitor management plan is a live document to allow continuous improvement.
There is a lot of inaccurate information circulating about the proposal particularly around the land. We would like to share the facts:
- This is a temporary use for the site. The planning consent and lease are for 5 years.
- The site has never received consent for housing. For the last 20 years it has been designated for community facilities and the long-term the permanent use for the site will be phase 2 of the Coin Street neighbourhood centre.
- Income generated from the rent will stay in the neighbourhood and be reinvested into the local and wider community. It’s used to improve and maintain our neighbourhood including managing and maintaining Bernie Spain Gardens and the riverside walkway and providing a range of programmes and activities for families, children, young people, adults and older people in Waterloo and North Southwark.
