Garden Bridge update
The Garden Bridge is a proposed new pedestrian crossing spanning the River Thames linking South Bank to Temple station, designed by Thomas Heatherwick and garden designer Dan Pearson. The South Bank ‘landing’ is on part of the Riverside Walkway by ITV London which is leased to Coin Street Community Builders. The freehold is owned by the London Borough of Lambeth.
Coin Street Community Builders has focussed on how the bridge could benefit the area (by increasing the green public realm and improving pedestrian links to the north bank) and the measures that would be needed to mitigate its impact.
We believe the Garden Bridge would be beneficial to London and our neighbourhood provided it is properly managed and maintained. However, if it is not properly managed and maintained, it will be a liability.
We recognise that the Garden Bridge proposal has become controversial. We have made it clear that if Lambeth, Westminster, the Mayor of London and the Government believe the project should go ahead, we will not stand in its way. However the decision needs to be taken by elected politicians.
Whilst the democratic process is underway we must ensure the operational plans are properly thought through and costed and, if the decision is to go ahead, the impacts of construction on the area are minimised, and the promised benefits are delivered.
